Talking About Race for the First Time Ever

I was a little nervous about hosting a New Conversation, primarily because I was hosting my family and we had never discussed race or racism before. I was impressed with my family's candor and ability to talk about the topic without shutting down, but initially, I felt disappointed because we strayed off into side conversations and had a hard time staying on task with the video and exercises.

Yet after reflecting on our experience, I realized that it didn't really matter that we had an imperfect session. The important thing was that my family was able to have a conversation about race for the first time ever. And the topic has come up subsequently at family gatherings, prompting further dialogue. I feel like my efforts were successfully because we did, indeed, have a new conversation.
