Lou Bellamy
Lou Bellamy has committed his life to changing perceptions on race. As founder and artistic director of Penumbra Theatre Company, he uses art to inspire others and increase dialogue in our communities—creating an environment of openness and respect.
Bellamy cites the words of Bertolt Brecht as ones that have inspired his life and involvement with anti-racism work: “Art is not a mirror which we hold up to reality, but a hammer and anvil we use to change it.” Early on, Bellamy realized that very few places existed where African Americans had control over the depiction of themselves. In birthing Penumbra 32 years ago, Bellamy created a safe place where authentic and respectful representations of African Americans exist, and where community issues are explored and addressed. “I believe that theater in the community must function as a sounding board, where comments concerning community values, aspirations, and clarifications are made lovingly—yet critically,” says Bellamy. “I am proud that Penumbra continues to thrive in a community that is questioning and willing to take stock of itself.” As an educator, Bellamy has been a member of the University of Minnesota’s faculty for 35 years. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance. Bellamy is also a McKnight Distinguished Artist—one of only 11 such artists statewide. He has received numerous local and national awards for his thought-provoking work and excellence in arts and education.
